Pennsylvania Shadducks

Note: The information in this page does not reflect the latest DNA evidence that includes results for a direct descendant of Ira Shadduck, son of the founder of a branch of the Pennsylvania Shadducks, Joseph Shattuck, Jr. (1773-1835). He is positive for the Y24059 SNP that groups descendants Jason Shaddock, Paul Michael Shattuck and Terry Lee Shadduck together as sharing a common ancestor. That common ancestor was probably Joseph Shattuck, Jr. or his father Joseph Shattuck, Snr. In the spring of 2020 I will be releasing an updated family history in PDF form that will discuss the latest DNA and document research for the Shattuck branch of the worldwide family. Join the Google Groups forum for a discussion of the latest research and for news about the Shattock family history book, now in beta format.

According to family legend, the Shadducks of Pennsylvania are descended from the Massachusetts Shattucks. This is confirmed by the DNA results. The Shattucks of Watertown Massachusetts are in turn a major branch of the worldwide Shattocke family. To see where the Shattucks fit in the worldwide Shattocke family tree see this graphic.

Click on the graphic to zoom in.

The Pennsylvania Shadducks that I feature on this page are descendants of John Shattuck (1647-1672), son of the Massachusetts Bay colony pilgrim William Shattuck (ca. 1622-1672). I have created a biography of John and a family tree of his descendants here. The above graphic shows where the Pennsylvania Shadducks sit in the world wide Shattocke tree. On the graphic you can see that the Pennsylvania Shadducks have a genetic mutation called Y24059. There are three people we have tested who belong to the branch of the Shattocke family tree called Y24059, Terry Lee Shadduck, Jason Shaddock and Paul Michael Shattuck. Paul Michael Shattuck belongs to the Illinois Shattucks and Jason Shaddock belongs to the West Bloomfield Shaddocks. So Y24059 is a common ancestor to both Pennsylvania Shadducks, New York Bloomfield Shattucks and Illinois Shattucks. The following graphic shows the line of descent from John Shattuck (1647-1675).

Margaret Evaline Fanning nee Shadduck (1837-1919). I love this picture. Evaline is from the Thomas B. Shadduck (1777-1856) branch of the Pennsylvania Shadducks. Her grandfather was Thomas B. She looks very proud of that purse and that hat.

You can see that the Pennsylvania Shadducks belong to the Groton Shattuck branch, and then the Marlborough Shattuck branch of the Massachusetts Shattucks.

Not all descendants with the surname Shadduck appear to be descended from the Pennsylvania Shadducks. So far all we have in terms of DNA results for descendants with the surname "Shadduck" is Terry Lee Shadduck. The other two Y24059 descendants may or may not prove to be Shadduck descendants as well.

Two other Shadducks we have tested have proven not to be genetically Shadducks . One was in fact genetically a Chaddock. I write about the Chaddocks on the Ancient Origin page. The Chaddocks belong to a completely different branch of the human family, U198, named after the SNP mutation they share in common. The Chaddocks are also from a different part of England, in the north, not the south west like the Shattocks. The branch of the Shadducks he is descended from is the one founded by Thomas B. Shattuck (1724-1803). So the big question becomes, was Thomas B. Shattuck actually a Chaddock, and passed his U198 mutation on to all his Shadduck descendants? If you trace your ancestry back to this man, you need to do at least a YDNA-37 test to determine your deep ancestry.

The other Shadduck that came back negative for the Shattocke SNPs is descended from Joseph Shadduck (1773-1835). It is likely the test subject had previously had the surname Stubblefield.

Genealogical research reveals that there were three original Shadduck settlers in Pennysylvania, and two were brothers, Joseph Shadduck (1773-1835) and John Shadduck (1783-1834), both from Worcester, Massachusetts. The third Shadduck settler, Thomas B. Shadduck III (1777-1856), was from Montgomery county in New York state and settled in Rushville, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. So if he was descended from a Chaddock, it is possible New York state is where the name confusion occurred. At this point we have only two DNA tests that can be reliably traced back to the three early settlers, and so far neither of the two main lineages have tested positive for the Shattocke genetic markers. The third Shadduck test has an uncertain paper trail before 1800.

According to most genealogical studies, there are three Pennsylvania Shadducks shared a common great grandfather: John Shattuck (1696-1759) who lived and died in Marlborough, Massachusetts. (He happens to be the shared ancestor as well between descendants Paul Michael Shattuck and Terry Lee Shadduck.) He is the fourth person down in this diagram:

But the Shadduck DNA result for descendants of Thomas B. Shattuck casts doubt on this scenario.

In terms of Terry's direct ancestor, he is Joseph Shadduck (1773-1835), shown on the far left bottom of the diagram. I will show you how I determined this through genealogical research. But the DNA results so far make my genealogical work open for doubt.

Lee Andrew Shadduck (1844-1865), brother to Evaline Shadduck shown above. He died at 21 in the last year of the Civil War. He drowned in the Potomac river. There is a very touching letter he wrote to one of his other sisters, Vicilla, in 1862 when he was in camp in Virginia. Read it here. The fact it has been passed down through the generations shows what a fine young man he was and how well-loved by his family. There would be many Shadducks called up to serve for their country, all the way down to Terry Lee Shattuck, who fought in Vietnam and his father in Korea before him.

A marriage license for Alfred Shadduck told me where in Pennsylvania to look for a possible branch of the Pennsylvania Shadducks Terry belongs to. All I had to do is figure out where the sons of the original Shadduck settlers dispersed in subsequent generations.

Terry's great grandfather Alfred Shattuck says on a marriage license he was born in North East, a township in Erie county, Pennsylvania. This is confirmed on his daughter Jessie's death certificate, which he signed, and where he states North East was where he was born. (She was one month short of her third birthday when she died of pneumonia.) I then began looking at all the Shadducks born or raised in Pennsylvania as a whole. Then I narrowed the focus to North East and the surrounding towns. The result? I was able to determine which Shadduck settler was Terry's ancestor: Joseph Shadduck (1773-1835). But there the paper trail hits a gap. I did not know who Terry's 2nd great grandfather is. Before I reveal who I thought he was, I will once more call upon the famous Shattuck family historian, Lemuel Shattuck to narrate the history of the Shadduck family from William Shattuck the Massachusetts Shattuck founder to Joseph Shadduck (1773-1835), founder of one of three Pennsylvania Shadduck branches.

John Shattuck (1647-1675)

John Shattuck was a carpenter, until he got caught up in the war against indigenous people, called King Philip's War. He died at the age of 25. Lemuel provides an account of John's life in his "Memorials of Descendants." I have excerpted it here.

John Shattuck and his wife Ruth had four children, John, Ruth, William and Samuel. Terry is descended from his third child William.

William Shattuck 1670-1743 (Groton Shattucks)

The Pennsylvania Shadducks are descended from William Shattuck (1670-1743), who moved to Groton, Massachusetts and founded a family dynasty. Read about his life here.

William and his wife Hannah Underwood had five children, William, Hannah, Daniel, Ruth and John. The Pennsylvania Shadducks are descended from John.

Charles Herbert Shadduck (1870-1941) and his wife Lyssa (1875-1963). Charles Herbert was the great grandson of Thomas B. Shadduck (1777-1856), one of the three of the earliest settlers in Pennsylvania. This is such a great picture because it captures a feeling for the rural farm life that has all but disappeared from American life, due to such technological advances as the car behind them. Does the picture remind you of the famous "American Gothic" painting by Grant Wood?

John Shattuck (1696-1759)

"John Shattuck was born in Watertown in 1696. He was a mason and farmer, and first settled in Shrewsbury, but exchanged places in 1723, with John Bigelow of Marlborough, and removed to the latter town and occupied the "Farms," (see note, p. 67.) where he d. about 1759. He administered on his father's estate in Groton, and was a highly intelligent man.

He married 1, Dec. 24, 1716, Silence Allen of Marlborough. He married 2, Oct. 23, 1754, Mary Newton, widow, of Southborough. She died June 4, 1760, bequeathing her property to her ten children by her first husband. "

John's children by Silence Allen were: Abigail, John, Thomas, Samuel, Ephraim, and Silas. Terry is descended from the eldest son, John.

John Shattuck (1721-1785)

"John Shattuck was born in Shrewsbury, Feb. 7, 1722, and settled in that part of Marlborough known as " The Farms," now within the limits of Framingham, where he died about Jan., 1785. His will is dated April 1, 1784, and was proved May 4, 1785. (Midd. Rec. LXVIL, p. 372.) He was

warden in Framingham in 1772, a selectman in 1777 and '78, and a respected and useful citizen. He was a large proprietor of Hubbardston.

He married 1, in Marlborough, Nov. 27, 1744, his 3d cousin Abigail Morse, born Nov. 11, 1725, dau. of Joseph Morse and Abigail Barnes, granddaughter of Joseph Morse and Grace Warren, and greatgranddaughter of Joseph Morse and Susanna Shattuck, (p. 66.).

He married 2, Mary . She died June 14, 1822, ae. 94 *

* About 3, P. M., Aug. 15, 1787, a tornado passed through the north part of Framingham, and "overturned the house occupied by this family, leaving the lower floor. Two children lying upon the bed were found uninjured A Mrs. Saunders, a sister of Mrs. Shattuck, living in the house, was carried by the violence of the wind to a considerable distance, and was seriously injured. Mrs. Shattuck was blown about ten rods. A feather bed was found three miles distant from the house, and in it were recovered thirty dollars in specie, which had previously been placed there for safe keeping." (Barry's History of Framingham, p. 68.)"

His children with Abigail Morse were: Joseph, Lucy, Reuben, Thaddeus, Susanna, John, Anna, and Chloe. Terry is descended from the first born, Joseph.

Joseph Shattuck (1745-1813)

"Joseph Shattuck was born in Marlborough, March 5, 1745. In 1769 he bought lands of his father in Hubbardston, and first settled in that town. In 1799, he and his son Joseph, being then described as residents of Greenfield, Alleghany Co., Pa., sell their lands in Hubbardston. We have been unable to obtain their subsequent history in Pennsylvania."

The story of Joseph Shattuck is picked up in history of Erie county written by John Miller called "A twentieth century history of Erie County, Pennsylvania: a narrative account of its historic progress, its people, and its principal interests (Volume 2)" (1909 The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago).

Here is what Miller writes about Joseph Shattuck on page 423:

Coming to Erie county in 1783, Joseph Shadduck was one of the first men to settle in Greenfield township. Buying from the government four hundred and sixty acres of land, at $1.25 an acre, he began the improvement of a farm from the wilderness. A man of stout heart and unlimited courage, he dared all the dangers and privations of frontier life, in order to pave the way for those who should follow, and to establish a home where his children and their descendants might enjoy the comforts, and even the luxuries of life, without the labor and toil in which his years were spent. He was successful in his operations, accumulating money, and subsequently bought one hundred acres of land in North East. He continued in agricultural labor during his active years, and passed away, in 1849, at a good old age. He came from honored New England ancestry, his father, Joseph Shadduck Sr., who served as a gallant soldier in the Revolutionary war, having been born and bred in Vermont. Joseph Shadduck was twice married. His first wife, whose maiden name was Harriet Cass, bore him eighteen children, of whom nine grew to years of maturity, as follows : George ; Henry, father of James M. ; Esther ; Nancy ; Hannah ; Polly ; Ann ; Lester ; and Hiram. By his last wife he had four children, Ira, Betsey, David and Matilda. Joseph Shadduck was the father of twenty-two children, a truly patriarchal family, and had 306 grandchildren.

It is not only the Joseph Shadduck lineage of the Pennsylvania Shadducks that were prolific. This image looks like it was from the 1930s. The line of descent is from the Thomas B. Shadduck (1777-1856).

Rev. Robert Henry "Bert" Shadduck (1869-1950) was a grandson of Joseph Shadduck. He was raised in an irreligious house, became an evangelical when he was eighteen, and eventually moved to Ohio where he was a Methodist pastor. His father was Henry Shadduck (1817-1905).

What John Miller does not tell us is that there was a court battle over Joseph Shadduck's estate since it was not at all clear who he was married to and who he was not, and what children were legitimate heirs. Some of the children brought into his household may not even have been his biological children, having been assumed from his spouses.

Something we can rule on right away is that Terry Lee Shadduck is indeed a Shattuck descendant since his DNA is a close match to the DNA of descendants of Shattucks from other branches. And we have a high degree of confidence that he belongs to the same branch of Shattucks as other Pennsylvania Shadducks because his genetic markers place him in the same lineage as his DNA matches point to a common ancestor in William Shattuck (1670-1743).

"Who's My Daddy?"

There are three sons of Joseph Shadduck who moved from their birthplace in Greenfield to farm in the North East township, a distance of about 150 miles, the three H's: Horace, Henry and Hiram. They were born between 1810 and 1824, so they were the right age to have a son Alfred Shattuck, Terry's 2nd great grandfather.

Fred Leslie Shadduck (1863-1949) and Minnie Olive Palmer (1875-1955). Fred was a son of Hiram Shaddock (1824-1886)

Henry Shadduck (1817-1905)

Henry Shadduck was born in Erie county, on the northwestern corner of Pennsylvania, bordering on Lake Erie. He died in Greenfield, Erie. This is the area where Terry's great grandfather was born.

I searched through all the possible candidates for Terry's 2nd great grandfather. Henry Shadduck was the only one who could have been his 2nd great grandfather.

I believe it was Henry's son, Benjamin Franklin Shadduck (1860-1931), known as "Frank," who conceived Alfred Shattuck, Terry's great grandfather. On Alfred's second (and bogus!) marriage license he says his father was named "Alfred" and his mother "Jessie." He gave the maiden name of his mother as "Mowe," or at least that was how it was written down. Frank Shadduck's wife was Jessie Ethel Covey (1868-1942). Afred named his first child "Jessie." He named his second child "Clarence." Frank had a brother Clarence. But of course the genetic tests of the two main branches of Pennyslvania Shadducks cast doubt on this paper trail.

Henry Shadduck (1817-1905)

Henry Shadduck (1817-1905) was born in Erie county and died in Greenfield in Erie county. Interesting enough, one of Henry's boys had the name of Clarence, which is Terry's grandfather's Christian name.

Joseph Shattuck (1773-1835) Genealogy

Joseph Shattuck was one of the original settlers in Pennsylvania. This is the branch Terry Lee Shadduck belongs to. Evan Shadduck, who is a Pennsylvania Shadduck descendant, specifically down from Joseph Shattuck, has provided a particularly useful document for determining Pennsylvania Shadduck ancestry. It is a transcription from a family bible that has been passed down from Sally Shattuck (1810-1884). She was the granddaughter of Joseph Shattuck (1745-1813) and daughter of Corning Shattuck (1786-1827). This makes the bible particularly valuable because the public records for the family are incomplete. The family history document can be downloaded from here.
